Marvel's Big Comic-Con Announcements
At Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday, Marvel Studios shared some big news about upcoming movies.
New Black Panther: Actor David Jonsson will play the new Black Panther. In the story, he plays the son of T'Challa (the character played by the late Chadwick Boseman). Jonsson appeared on stage with director Ryan Coogler, and actors Letitia Wright and Winston Duke. He looked very happy and touched his hand to his heart. He said he was thankful to join this "family" and wanted the movie itself to speak for him instead of saying too much now. The new movie, "Black Panther III," will come out on December 15, 2028.
Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020. Since the 2022 movie "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" showed that T'Challa had a son, fans have been guessing who would play him as an adult. Other actors like Damson Idris and Letitia Wright were also rumored for the role.
The first "Black Panther" movie (2018) was historic — it was the first superhero movie ever nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and it earned over $1.3 billion around the world. The sequel earned $850 million.
New Ghost Rider: Actor Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider in a new movie. It will be directed by Shawn Levy, who also directed Gosling in "Star Wars: Starfighter." Levy joked that being back on stage at Comic-Con felt like a flashback, since he was also there two years ago for "Deadpool & Wolverine," which became a huge hit. Gosling said he has wanted to play this character for a long time, and he greeted Marvel's boss, Kevin Feige, on stage.
Fun fact: Gosling's partner, Eva Mendes, was actually in an earlier "Ghost Rider" movie back in 2007, starring alongside Nicolas Cage. That was before Marvel's connected movie universe even started with "Iron Man" in 2008. A sequel came out in 2012, but now the movie rights belong to Marvel again — and Ghost Rider hasn't shown up in their movies yet.
Other News: Kevin Feige also announced that the 2019 movie "Avengers: Endgame" will return to theaters on September 25, with new scenes added. These new scenes will connect it to the upcoming movie "Avengers: Doomsday," coming out December 18.
A trailer for "Doomsday" was shown too. It hinted that Robert Downey Jr.'s character, Doctor Doom, has some kind of past connection to Reed Richards and Sue Storm (characters from the Fantastic Four). Sue Storm says that Doom used to be a different person before he lost everything he loved. Later, Reed Richards asks Doom if he caused the disasters happening around them.
